An Evening At The Bijou was a TV program
focusing on singer-songwriters. We wound up on The Austin Music Network and
Time Warner Cable in Central Texas and had about 18 months in the sun before putting on the
lens cap. We also spent three years at The Kerrville Folk Festival and were
the production company that shot and edited all the programs. This list will
be added to as time allows. There are already
dozens of videos up at YouTube.
Just search on the name, "bakslider" Please enjoy.

IMPORTANT
UPDATE!! I put up a lot of files this week and I am
considering setting up downloads on a subscription basis as so many
people are downloading files and nobody is donating. I am not Sony or
Warner Bros, if everybody keeps freeloading, I will leave the Flash
jukeboxes up for your listening enjoyment, but the direct links to
downloadable MP3s will disappear. Do the right thing and
help out.
This page is a work-in-progress.
Please support the effort &
donate.
The Music Office/OverDue Records/Greg Forest are the copyright
(SR) owner to these recordings. Thanks to all the labels and
management that granted permission for these recordings.
LIVE RECORDINGS from austin & LIBERTY LUNCH'S POST PUNK HEYDAY
1987-1989
These are old radio shows and scraps from the vault that I thought a few old
die-hard, post punk, proto-alternative fans might enjoy. Produced by
myself and
Keith Ayers in association with W.R. Productions between 1987
and 1989, we (or more accurately our interns) dragged cable through the
mud, blood and beer under the stages at Liberty Lunch, Antones,
Steamboat, The Backroom and other Austin venues to snag some great
bands.
The shows were recorded
live, direct to 2-track, on a primitive Akai 14-bit PCM and VHS deck
until we moved up to a 16-bit Sony F-501 PCM & a SVHS
deck. Back in my studio, the digital recordings were transferred to tape (Tascam-32). No overdubs, no punching and flying without a net, we recorded some great performances under
less-than-perfect conditions. Artists are listed quasi-alphabetically. This project is a lot of work and
donations are greatly appreciated.

We couldn't find a sponsor, recording
bands with names like this. It was a little over the top for
even the beer companies. This is Natalie Merchant before she
became an MTV diva and pop star. This is from her cult heroine
days. The evening was a nightmare of technical problems and this
was all I could salvage.
Alex Chilton
When Alex sailed west recently the traffic
on the site went through the roof with fans downloading this
concert. Another friend who recently passed, Bert Winston,
was the executive producer for the whole series and it would not
have been possible t make these recordings without him. In
two parts - use the "next track" button. Enjoy
Big
Guitars From Texas Texas is full of guitar slingers. The 2nd
Generation crop started with Stevie Ray Vaughn but there are
still some cats from the old school that can find their way
around a fret board. Austin's Amazing Records signed the Big
Guitars and they had a good run in the late 80s. Although not as
flashy as some posers, these guys are the real deal.
Blue Movie We recorded a lot of bands and most have
left a trail, however cold, I can pick up on the Internet. This
band is an exception. All I can remember is that they were
from the Bay Area and opened for Gordon Gano & the Mercy Seat.
They seemed to have vanished from the face of the digital Earth.
If you hear from these guys, let me know!
Booze WeaselsThis recording snagged two of my favorite
guitar slingers - David & David. A great band
featuring David Grissom, David Holt, Jimmy Pettit and Mike Buck
recorded live at Antones .
The band's goal was to drink and pick. There may be a clam or
two in here, but I sure can't play this good. Seven-fingered
wonders both of 'em.

Joe King
Carrasco Who is the King of Texas Party Punk? Lord
of Spring Break with a rockin reggae/conjunto/spazzibily sound?
Joe King Carrasco y los Coronas! The most memorable thing
I recall from a Joe King show is that he was also WORLD ZEN
MASTER of the crowd dive. Able to swing out over audiences in a
single bound, here's Joe King.
Jimmy Carl
Black was the, "Indian of the group," back in the original
Mothers of Invention. This is a recording from my basement studio on Lamar
(formerly Electric Gracyland). The audience noise was dubbed in to get a
"live" radio show out of it. Ladies and Gentlemen -
Jimmy Carl Black & the Grandmothers
In the 1970s there was a robust original live music scene in San Antonio,
Texas that has yet to be equaled. It all revolved around a tiny club called
The Bijou. The best in Texas singer/songwriters performed there every night
years before the "Redneck Rock" or "Alternative" movement. This was
Americana thirty years before such a thing existed. In the early 21st
Century, I produced a series of TV shows and named the program, "An Evening
at the Bijou," trying to recapture the mood of those glory days.
We tapped the first seven groups over three nights at the Point
Theatre in Ingram, Texas and the rest at whatever venues we could get
our cameras into. These are the audio files for those programs.
I am
posting the audio from those programs first with the video to follow as time
allows. Of course time allows much more when you downloading fools make a
small donation. Thanks for your support.
